Himeji Castle

Himeji is home to the White Heron Castle and Kokoen garden next door.  The castle is one of twelve original ones and a Unesco World Heritage Site.  There are 9 number different Edo period garden styles represented in the Kokoen complex, as well as bonsai displays.  The gardens are divided by walls to slam as much style and diversity into an arguably small amount of space by Western standards for garden scale.  It would be easy to spend a whole day at the castle and gardens, and I was especially impressed with the koi ponds and bamboo garden.
